The Soul Drums P.O.P. Program integrates activities from contemporary drum circles with open group discussion to teach skills. The program serves a whole classroom at a time and is designed for delivery by persons with no musical experience. It is inclusive, culturally relevant, and does not bear the stigma of counselling.
Our experience has shown that the P.O.P. program can significantly improve many behaviour issues, as well as positively effect social skills while developing leadership principles.
Soul Drums P.O.P. events emphasize process and not performance. It includes a metaphorical dimension involving guided interaction. This training is packed with 4 hours of usable information, culturally specific hand drum techniques and rhythms, and course training materials for further studies and to improve in-class facilitation skills.
Fourth and fifth grade students are ideally suited for this program because their peer centric developmental stage lends itself well to group-oriented activities, reflection upon behaviour, and motor mastery; however, P.O.P. can be easily adapted to any population, including teens, at- risk youth, and older adults.
P.O.P. was developed through the experiences gained in over 30 years of the combined expertise of Soul Drums Facilitation Staff presenting to a diverse client list that include Professional Educational Institutions, The Federal and Provincial Government Sectors, Hospitals and Professional Medical Institutions. Therefore, the product is professionally sound, rhythmically engaging, and sustainable.
Many school counsellors, teachers, social workers, therapists and corporate trainers in the Province of Ontario have received professional development training in our Soul Drums P.O.P. programs. Those that have implemented the program respond that the program is useful and that the curriculum materials are user-friendly.
