Meinl Darbukas are made in the tradition of the original, esoteric goblet-shaped drums found in music from Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Southern Asia. Meinls darbuka drums are constructed from thin shells in various metals, each metal giving the different models their special timbre. The head is secured and tuned with external rings set close to the shell, in the Turkish-style. Light yet powerful, the darbukas have a deep full bass. They are well suited for high-pitched snapping sounds as well as a wide range of articulated “doum” and “tak” strokes. These Turkish style hand drums feature fat lows and ringing highs with a wide range between.
African Claves are slightly larger and have a lower fundamental pitch. Additionally, the resonating body is larger than the striker. Available in two different versions: Solid and hollowed out body.
Meinl Doumbeks come from the same geographical points of origin as the darbukas, and are a favourite choice of drum for percussionists world-wide. Our doumbeks feature an ergonomic, Egyptian-style rounded rim with internal tuning lugs and a synthetic head. The bearing edge is carefully machined to assure consistent tuning. The doumbeks are well suited for fast finger-roll techniques and have a strong projection. The shells are constructed from various materials, each offering a wide range of timbres, weights and visual aesthetics.
