SONOR, proudly celebrating a tradition of 140 years of excellence has announced the launch of the Limited Edition One of a Kind snare drums to be introduced at Winter NAMM 2015. These limited drums are the top of the line of the SONOR snare program and honour the long tradition of exiting veneers and innovative instruments within the company’s history.
Each series features an extremely limited run of special designed snare drums with spectacular natural grown veneers and new shell designs. For each edition a certain tree has been selected with the goal in mind to only use the most exiting parts of the grain and set them to perfectly set vertical grain patterns. Vertical outside veneer grains have been introduced through SONOR in 1973 and are the companies trademark ever since.
All veneers are sourced at specialized suppliers in Germany, which guarantee that these trees come from environment friendly sources and are exported/ imported legally.
The instruments badges highlight laser cut mallet shaped logos, made out of the same veneer that is used on the snares itself.
Each One Of A Kind snare drum is delivered in a hard case, made to SONOR’s specification and includes a personal ‘welcome to the SONOR family’ package.

The Zelkova hollowed snare drum is CANOPUS’ flagship model. In the primary development process we first experimented with traditional drum crafting theory.Originally we cut the drum’s edge at an angle of 45 degrees on both the inside and outside of the drum’s shell. Our first try was insufficient in resonance and was rather dull in regards to the drum’s sensitivity.
We continued to experiment with several different edge angles. Including 70. 60 and 60 degrees. After our trials and errors. we have finally completed an unprecedented edge shaping process. The end result is a hand crafted snare drum with maximam resonance and a delicate yet fat sound with sharp response.
Our new edge shaping is very sharp. This overturns existing edge shaping theory. What we learned through comprehensive. In order to pull the best potential sound out of the drum. the edge shaping must be determined by the material. thickness and structure of the shell. These lessons learned contributed to establish the framework for CANOPUS’ development policy. These encounters have shaped our attitude towards the drum crafting process. Accordingly. when we are engaged in oour drums and accessory development project we doubt the widely accepted drum production theoly from the fundamental level.
Since 2004, drumming scene’s shooting star Benny Greb is part of the SONOR family. Says Benny: “For me as an artist it is key to embrace both tradition and innovation, and the guys at the Sonor drum company do that same thing. I feel close to people that love what they do and who are dedicated to quality. That’s why I feel close to the Sonor Company.”
Benny can be found playing with an assortment of musicians, all demanding his tasteful and immaculate playing style. You will find him in rock settings, laying down a ferocious backbeat with both Stoppok and The Ron Spielman Trio, in jazz with the aptly titled Benny Greb Brass Band.
Early 2010, SONOR and Benny begun working on a very special Snare Drum, Benny’s very own Signature model that is as versatile and musical as Benny himself. Benny favors Beech, and that’s what gives the drum its transparency, warmth and a wide tuning range with a fat sound. The beautiful outer veneer is Scandinavian Birch that adds a timeless look to the drum. But it wouldn’t be Benny without adding something very special. The personalized Benny Greb badge shows his unique “Cartoon-head”, and a soft rubber ring is being applied to the shell.
“IN ALL OF MY RECENT RECORDINGS YOU CAN HEAR THE HUGE SOUND AND VERSATILITY OF THIS GREAT INSTRUMENT. I’M HAPPY TO SHARE THIS SOUND NOW WITH YOU. HAVE FUN WITH IT!” Benny Greb

Built to the same professional standards as our Black Beauty, Supraphonic, and Bronze Phonic models, the new Copper Phonic is a proud addition to the Ludwig USA family and a legend in the making. Available in 5×14″ (LC661), and 6.5 x14″(LC663) sizes.
Sonor Vintage Series Snare Drum
6.5″ x 14″
White Marine Pearl Finish
Sonor Vintage snare drums feature a new throw off. The ‘Super 50’, a completely redesigned strainer, was inspired by the throw off which was used on the SONOR D-411 and D-412 snares in the 1950’s.
Ludwig Hammered Brass Snare Drum
6.5″ x 14″
Having a similar sonic quality to the Black Beauty but at a higher pitch, Ludwig’s 5×14″ and 6.5×14″ Brass models are hammered using the same process as Ludwig Timpani to expand their playable range. Though each has a similar hammering pattern, no two are exactly alike and vary slightly in tonality. Choose from 5″x14″ and 6.5″x14″ models.
Legacy’s 3-ply Maple/Poplar shell lends itself to round, fat tones with a deep low fundemental tone. Legacy snare drums offer thick, focused attack with few overtones. Perfect for classic, centered tonality.
We have achieved the perfect balance between the pleasant, vintage sound of the 1960’s and the expectations of modern snare design. Its profound core sound match the wide range of music genres heard today. Wider tuning range is an attraction of NV60-M1, which one is unlikely to find from Vintage drums.

SONOR ProLite Sound
The core of the ProLite series is the sound spectrum provided by the extremely thin Vintage Maple shells with reinforcement ring. These provide an unmistakably open sound and an enormously wide tuning range for practically all styles of music. SONOR’s Vintage Maple shell is characterized by a soft, warm tone that highlights the lower pitches and provides balance in the mid-range and treble, without sacrificing projection and power.
Gretsch Brooklyn series metal snare drums add another professional and distinctive voice to the Gretsch snare line up. All shells include Gretsch “302” 3mm/double-flanged hoops, Lightning throw off and butt plate, “Snap-in” drum key holder, 20-strand snare wire and Gretsch Permatone drum heads. The brass shells resonate with classic, musical tones and are extremely versatile. The “302” hoops provide a timbre that is more open and ambient than traditional Gretsch die-cast hoops.
Our drums start from wood. Not round, perfectly formed pre-fabricated shells, but flat sheets of the most beautiful, perfect wood one can acquire. These same sheets could have been used to make a couch or a cabinet, a desk or a door. And in the right hands it would have been the best couch, cabinet, desk or door you could find. That’s not what we do at C&C Drum Company though. At C&C, we make the best shells you can find from those sheets of wood. We cut, glue, pressure mold, sand and route every shell we make, and if it’s not perfect we start over. It’s as simple as that. We do it because we care about the drums we make, just as much as you care about the drums you play.
