Ludwig Hammered Brass Snare Drum
6.5″ x 14″
Having a similar sonic quality to the Black Beauty but at a higher pitch, Ludwig’s 5×14″ and 6.5×14″ Brass models are hammered using the same process as Ludwig Timpani to expand their playable range. Though each has a similar hammering pattern, no two are exactly alike and vary slightly in tonality. Choose from 5″x14″ and 6.5″x14″ models.
Ludwig Patrick Carney Salesman Snare Drum
6.5″ x 14″
Created in the 50′s and 60′s for traveling road reps, the ‘Salesman Sparkle’ kit was a rare showpiece for Ludwig’s rainbow of available finishes. Re-imagined with Classic Maple Shells for the modern arena stage by Black Keys’ drummer Patrick Carney, the New Salesman kit reflects the classic styling of the original with modern sonic thunder.
7-ply Cross-Laminated North American Maple.
Preferred by professionals for its tonal versatility, Classic Maple drums are the ideal choice for any performance application. Its high sensitivity, wide dynamic tuning range, and sharp attack make it the ideal choice for live performance. Yet Classic Maple’s 7-ply shell is crafted to respond to the player and environment quickly, making it adaptable to any playing style or preference.
Each drum’s bearing edge is cut to a 45-degree angle within 1/16″ from the outside edge. This sharp edge is hand-sanded to the craftsman’s touch to assure a smooth, even, flat surface for easy head seating; the final touch to complete the unmistakable Ludwig Sound.
Classic Maple’s standard 7-ply, 6mm shell is formulated for optimum resonance and tonality. Its center three-ply core panel (laminated in a horizontal/vertical/horizontal grain bond to a 2.4mm thickness,) is inserted between inner and outer two-ply panels through our proprietary RFST molding process.
To increase stability through out the drum, all Ludwig USA shells are produced using Radio Frequency Shell Technology. Using a process involving our original bladder molds, R.F.S.T.’s unique bonding system -combined with a specialized, time-tested adhesive- cures each shell evenly over the entire surface of the shell. This process is truly a principal ingredient in creating the “Ludwig Sound” in every shell we make.
The Zelkova hollowed snare drum is CANOPUS’ flagship model. In the primary development process we first experimented with traditional drum crafting theory.Originally we cut the drum’s edge at an angle of 45 degrees on both the inside and outside of the drum’s shell. Our first try was insufficient in resonance and was rather dull in regards to the drum’s sensitivity.
We continued to experiment with several different edge angles. Including 70. 60 and 60 degrees. After our trials and errors. we have finally completed an unprecedented edge shaping process. The end result is a hand crafted snare drum with maximam resonance and a delicate yet fat sound with sharp response.
Our new edge shaping is very sharp. This overturns existing edge shaping theory. What we learned through comprehensive. In order to pull the best potential sound out of the drum. the edge shaping must be determined by the material. thickness and structure of the shell. These lessons learned contributed to establish the framework for CANOPUS’ development policy. These encounters have shaped our attitude towards the drum crafting process. Accordingly. when we are engaged in oour drums and accessory development project we doubt the widely accepted drum production theoly from the fundamental level.

Since 2004, drumming scene’s shooting star Benny Greb is part of the SONOR family. Says Benny: “For me as an artist it is key to embrace both tradition and innovation, and the guys at the Sonor drum company do that same thing. I feel close to people that love what they do and who are dedicated to quality. That’s why I feel close to the Sonor Company.”
Benny can be found playing with an assortment of musicians, all demanding his tasteful and immaculate playing style. You will find him in rock settings, laying down a ferocious backbeat with both Stoppok and The Ron Spielman Trio, in jazz with the aptly titled Benny Greb Brass Band.
Early 2010, SONOR and Benny begun working on a very special Snare Drum, Benny’s very own Signature model that is as versatile and musical as Benny himself. Benny favors Beech, and that’s what gives the drum its transparency, warmth and a wide tuning range with a fat sound. The beautiful outer veneer is Scandinavian Birch that adds a timeless look to the drum. But it wouldn’t be Benny without adding something very special. The personalized Benny Greb badge shows his unique “Cartoon-head”, and a soft rubber ring is being applied to the shell.
“IN ALL OF MY RECENT RECORDINGS YOU CAN HEAR THE HUGE SOUND AND VERSATILITY OF THIS GREAT INSTRUMENT. I’M HAPPY TO SHARE THIS SOUND NOW WITH YOU. HAVE FUN WITH IT!” Benny Greb
For our NV60-M2, we analyzed the drum sound that stormed the rock world in the 1960′s. The shell construction is made of 3 ply mahogany and poplar with a maple reinforcement.
Thin 1.6mm pressed hoops that are customized for the NV60-M2 shells further refine the vintage sound.
The attack sounds from the surface of the head father than the point to create an immediate response with sticks and beaters. Crisp and clear sounds recreate the nostalgic sensation of a vintage rock kit and cleanly articulate every audible stroke.
※ We recommend as the standard specification for the NV60-M2 without bolt-tight washers since we put more emphasis on the reproduction of the vintage sound of 1960s.
We have achieved the perfect balance between the pleasant, vintage sound of the 1960’s and the expectations of modern snare design. Its profound core sound match the wide range of music genres heard today. Wider tuning range is an attraction of NV60-M1, which one is unlikely to find from Vintage drums.

Our drums start from wood. Not round, perfectly formed pre-fabricated shells, but flat sheets of the most beautiful, perfect wood one can acquire. These same sheets could have been used to make a couch or a cabinet, a desk or a door. And in the right hands it would have been the best couch, cabinet, desk or door you could find. That’s not what we do at C&C Drum Company though. At C&C, we make the best shells you can find from those sheets of wood. We cut, glue, pressure mold, sand and route every shell we make, and if it’s not perfect we start over. It’s as simple as that. We do it because we care about the drums we make, just as much as you care about the drums you play.
All USA Custom Series wood snare drums feature legendary 6-ply Gretsch maple shells and are available in a wide variety of sizes, finishes, snare throw-offs and other options. All wood snares feature chrome hardware with Die Cast Hoops and 20-strand steel Gretsch snare wires. 6.5×14 snares are available in 10, 16, or 20 lug configurations. Gretsch’s proprietary snare bed is cut into all wood drums to maximize snare articulation and response. Our classic key holder and tone control options are available, as they have been for over 50 years.
